We are finally back from our spring break in Croatia, and it was fantastic. First of all, we can count our blessings that very little went wrong given all that could have (car/driver trouble, getting significantly lost, kids puking on the ferry ride, etc.). We made it back in one piece around midnight last night and our other kid, Morris the cat, was there to greet us/yell at us for leaving for a week.
There’s a ton to write about from the week, so we’ll just start with the one day we were in Split. We spent most of the day strolling around Diocletian’s Palace, which is the city’s main attraction. In the morning, we listened to Easter Mass outside of the palace church (it was far too crowded to get inside and we weren’t quite dressed for it anyhow). This was probably the best part of the day, as it was a very impressive ordeal…the Mass was in Latin, with a beautiful choir, and the bells afterward rang so loud they nearly drowned out Rosetta asking why the bells were ringing so loud.
In the afternoon, we toured the palace itself, which is mainly underground. This was also impressive, as it was built in the 4th century and is said to be one of the most well-preserved structures of its time. It was also the only place to get away from the slews of vendors selling cheesy and/or crude t-shirts, hats, and coffee mugs to commemorate visits to a 1700-year-old palace.
We ended the day early to get things in order for our “big boat ride” the next day. We returned to our apartment and had one of our tea parties on the balcony, which overlooked the Adriatic. Way off in the distance, we could see the silhouette of the island of Vis, where we were heading in the morning. After watching the sun set over the water and sipping a few Karlovačkos, we headed off to bed. So far, so good.
